滚动轴承是在机械传动过程中起固定承载的作用，以及通过旋转减小传动摩擦的部件，它的主要作用就是在旋转过程中降低摩擦。通常意义上来讲利用滚动代替了滑动来降低摩擦力。

这些种类的轴承根据其特点，使用的场合也各不相同。例如圆柱、球轴承会用在高速场合下，比如交通车辆、农业机械、工程机械等；大型圆柱和圆锥滚子轴承用在高载荷情况下，比如风电齿轮箱、机床、轧机、冶金机械、工程机械等；球面滚子轴承用在工作环境恶劣、载荷较高的环境中，如冶金、轧机、水泥、矿山机械。所以可以看出，大型特大型轴承在国家建设中是不可或缺的部分。

大部分滚动轴承由外圈、滚动体、保持器、内圈组成。以机车轮子为例，外圈镶嵌在轮圈上，内圈镶嵌在轮轴上，轮轴与轮子的相对旋转依靠滚动体在外圈和内圈之间的滚动来实现。
